Health: Who’s Responsible?

After re-reading Bruce Epperly’s God’s Touch: Faith, Wholeness, and the Healing Miracles of Jesus, which I have recently given much attention in this blog, I decided it is important to note a couple very significant passages from his work (and this book is bursting with them!). Why? Because I agree with Epperly’s assertion that we must stop placing the blame of illness, disease, dis-ease on the one who is suffering. As Epperly notes:

…Christians and new age healers … place total responsibility for health and illness in the hands of the one who is in need or those who pray for her. “Just name it and claim it,” shouts the evangelist. “Soak your problem with prayer, and you will be released of your burden,” avers the faith healer. “Since you create your own reality, just change your mind, and the results will immediately follow,” advises the new age spiritual healer. While such changes in attitude and spiritual focus make a difference and can bring about surprising personal healings, the dark side of these approaches is evident in the feelings of guilt, disappointment, and alienation from God that often emerge when the expected healing does not occur. [p40-41]

Stop Using Dogs as Live Shark Bait!

I was completely mortified when I caught wind of this atrocity …

Innocent stray dogs are being skewered alive and being dragged behind boats as shark bait. Help Animal Rights and sign a letter to the French government to ask for an end to this inhumane practice in Reunion Island (French-controlled). We are asking the government to make sure this never happens again. You can WATCH THE VIDEO that shows the poor dog being rescued — see below. Here is the petition:

As you know, I don’t normally post items such as this. Under the circumstances, however, I felt it was necessary to spread the word so we can, by God’s grace, stop this unforgivable terror.

Healing & Wholeness Meditation

The following is from this month’s BoM, Bruce Epperly’s God’s Touch (end of chapter one). It is a very simple meditation for healing and wholeness. One of many in his book.

An Experiment in Healing and Wholeness

Healing begins with the most basic experience of life – the simple act of breathing. God’s Spirit blows through all things, giving them life and inspiration. When we open ourselves to this holy breath, we experience balance, energy, clarity, and focus in our lives. Simply breathing in and out, with an awareness of our many thoughts, as well as the One who breaths through us, centers us and delivers us from habitual thought patterns. In the simple act of breathing, we may discover that beneath the shallowness of our usual patterns of breathing and spirituality is the deeper, more centered breath of the Holy Spirit.

In this experiment in healing and wholeness, simply do what comes naturally. Accept the abundant grace that comes with each breath. While sitting comfortably with your eyes closed, take time to do the following:
